Outfit Crush: Winter Sweater

I came across this cute layered look on Style Caster last week and it shared 50 winter outfits to copy right now. There were quite a few that I saved to my inspiration list and this is one of my favs. It is worn by blogger Irena from A Portable Package who's also a dentist by day. Pretty cool, huh? She has a really nice style with looks that most of us would love to copy and make our own.

DIY: Blinging Beanie

Supplies:
beanie
buttons with bling
needle and thread or medium safety pins

Decide where you want to place the buttons. You can use 1, 2 or more buttons.
Hand stitch into place with needle and thread or secure buttons with safety pins if you want it to be interchangeable between different color beanies. (As you can see, I switched the buttons to my red beanie.)

Even though I don't wear skirts that often, I know a cute look when I see it. I'm currently crushing on this look by Folake Kuye Huntoon from Style Pantry. If you don't already know about Folake, she shares her looks of the day as well as tips on where to buy bargain pieces. Most of her outfits usually include high heels but it can easily be recreated with a pair of flats or lower heeled shoes or boots. I would most likely wear a pair of ankle boots or oxfords with this look. The exact skirt she's wearing is sold out but I did find one similar to it for less than $25.

It's the first of the month! Can you guys believe it's November already? The holiday season has officially begun and with that comes colder days. Luckily, the temperature here is still decent (it can't seem to make up it's mind.) and I can still wear tanks and tees without scarves on some days.

On Wednesday, Mel and I had date night and we went to a Jamaican restaurant for dinner. The food was bomb and I ate almost everything on my plate plus had a few bites of carrot pie. I know, I'm greedy but it made me so happy. :-)

I styled my look with my camo pants, and white tee, and a neutral cardigan. Camo is a cool trend that will always be around and when the weather does get a bit colder, I can style the pants with a graphic sweatshirt and some moto or combat boots

Plaid and Leather

This week's Style Me Friday inspiration is plaid. I wore plaid here on Sunday and kept it casual. I also wore plaid with a blazer I made and style it with a grunge look. Today I decided to continue with the plaid and leather look.

DIY: Cut Out Shoulder Shirt

I bought this shirt about a month ago on sale and assumed that the medium will fit me fine. I keep forgetting that I have broad shoulders so not all mediums will fit me like I want it to. Sometimes I end up with the shirt buttons fighting to stay in place and that is a no go for me. Some large shirts fit me fine but there are some that are too loose in the side and waist area which isn't always a good thing. I really liked that the shirt is sheer and it's in my favorite color so I couldn't justify giving it up. I decided to create a cut out shoulder look that way my boobs and my shoulders will have a little bit more breathing room. Sorry, I forgot to take a few pics of some steps. Supplies: shirt chalk pins round object scissors heat bond or needle & thread or sewing machine

Put the shirt on and mark where you want it to start and where you want it to end. You can use chalk or pins.
Fold the shirt completely in half making sure the shoulder seams are lined up. This is to make sure each will be evenly cut.
Take a round object like a small plate and place it between your markings. Trace around the plate and connect the points.
Cut along the trace line. The cut out piece should be in a shape of a oval.
Fold the cut edge down about a 1/4 inch and either hand sew or machine stitch a seam. You can also use heat bond for a no sew project.

I styled it with a pair of faded black mid rise skinny jeans and black suede ankle boots and wore it Saturday night as Mel and I celebrated our 5th anniversary. Time sure does fly when you're having fun! :-)

Today is our actual anniversary and I created and printed a pair of tickets as one of Mel's gifts. We will be locked in our room tonight after work enjoying a couple of good movies with some pizza and popcorn.

DIY: Embellished Sweatshirt

We're back with another DIY collaboration and this month's project is embellished sweatshirts. Mckenzie from Why Buy It DIY It created her sweatshirt using leopard gems and I created mine using studs, buttons and zippers. Supplies: gold triangle, square and circle iron on studs gold cone prong studs gold buttons black bling stickers glue needle and thread iron and press cloth zippers sewing machine sweatshirt (thrifted $2)

I made the sweatshirt more fitting by taking in the sleeves about 3 inches and the sides about 1 inch. It was originally a men's medium.
You can create a design or pattern first or just randomly place the pieces anywhere. It took me two days to come up with a design. I know I have to stop procrastinating.
First I applied the iron studs.
Second I applied glue to the stickers and pressed in place. I used Aleene's jewel-it glue. The glue is white but it dries clear.
Next, I pushed the cone studs through the sweatshirt and flattened down the prongs.
Lastly, I used needle and thread to hand sew the buttons in place.
For the zippers, I marked and measured where I wanted it to go and stitched each side onto the sweatshirt using a zipper foot. I cut off the excess and applied fray stop to the ends.

DIY: Tuxedo Stripe Jeans

Supplies: painters tape fabric paint or acrylic paint textile medium gloss varnish or sealer paintbrush or sponge bowl or plate for paint jeans

Make sure the jeans are ironed and free from wrinkles. Apply the painters tape to the side of your jeans about 2 inches wide. My jeans already had a panel so I didn't have to do any measuring. Pour the paint in the bowl and begin applying the paint to the jeans. If you use acrylic paint, mix it with the textile medium before painting. This is so the paint area won't be stiff and hard. I used the same shade paint as my jeans because I wanted a subtle stripe versus a stark contrast. Let paint dry. A hour should be good enough. Repeat on other side. If necessary, apply another coat of paint. I applied a coat of clear gloss varnish to make it shine and stand out a little more since it was kind of blending in. You can also create the tuxedo stripe look by applying a 1- 2 inch wide ribbon of your choice to the sides of your jeans with glue, adhesive tape or by sewing it on.

The Show Must Go On

Eboni is off enjoying her vacation in Cabo but according to Trina from Baby Shopaholic, the show must go on. :-) Trina chose vests as this week's Style Me Friday inspiration. I have a vest. I actually have a few vests. I have a moto vest, a blazer vest, a few denim vests, and some sweater vests/cardigans. I'm working on getting a utility vest, one day. A vest is a pretty easy piece to style. You usually just layer it over or under something. Or so I thought. Just because you have the pieces doesn't mean a new look would come to you instantly. I actually styled my look at the last minute last night after work. I decided to go with a leather and denim look and I kept it simple by wearing all black. Casual and comfy with a little edge. How do you wear your vests?
