DIY: Leather Pocket

First up on the leather accents DIY project list is the leather pocket. I thought I'd start off easy. Both leather and plaid are currently big trends so I thought it would be cool to combine them together.
Supplies:
Shirt
faux leather fabric
scissors
seam ripper
clips
sewing gauge
chalk
pattern paper or wax free paper if you don't have a teflon, walking or glide sewing foot.
sewing machine (denim needle)
  • Remove the original pocket from the shirt using the seam ripper.
  • Iron flat the original pocket and place on top of leather fabric. Pin or clip in place. (Pins may leave holes so hair clips, bobby pins or paper clips will work)
  • Using the chalk trace around the pocket onto the leather piece. Cut along the marked line.
  • Use the sewing gauge to measure the seams you will create when you fold down around the pocket. Use the clips to hold in place.
  • Adjust the thread tension looser to about a 4 and adjust the stitch length longer to about a 3.
  • Place the pattern paper over the pocket and sew as you normally would. Sew the top part of the pocket. I originally marked my lines with the chalk but it was hard to see once the paper was added. I guess a trip to the craft store for a teflon foot is coming. The next leather projects should go smoother.
  • Remove the paper from the pocket. Gently scratch off any pieces that wasn't removed.
  • Place the pocket on the correct area of the shirt and clip paper on top. Sew the pocket onto the shirt. Remove the paper.

What do you guys think about plaid and leather together?

Melswear: Chukka Boot

Melswear

This week's men's wear look is centered around men's chukka or desert boots. Clarks chukka boots are versatile and can be worn in many different looks. Mel told me that she was taking a break from being my men's wear model. The funny part? She said a few months! Not a couple weeks, or 1 month but a FEW months. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-) It's okay. I'm just as into men's style as much as my own personal style and Thursdays' posts shall continue. Anywho, Mel styled her chukka boots this week by wearing a pair of olive colored jeans and a denim button up. Isn't the wooden watch awesome?

Melswear: Prep it Out

It time for Melswear Thursday! This week is centered on the preppy trend but with a little twist. I suggested Mel roll up her cargo khakis and prep it out with her outfit. She decided on a short sleeved white plaid shirt tucked in. I like the way she rolled up her sleeves. Makes me think of the movie Grease. All she's missing is a pack of cigarettes. Good thing she doesn't smoke. She wore red chucks and of course she threw on a fitted. Mel loves her caps.

Melswear: Color Blocked

It's been a while since Mel has allowed me to take photos of her in different outfits. She allows me to pick out her outfits frequently but won't let me take any photos. So you can imagine how happy I was when she said I can. Yay, yay! This outfit features the color block trend. I got the inspiration from Isaiah over at A Collected Gentlemen. Check out his blog. I will try to have one post a week based on menswear.

How does your significant other wear the color block trend?
